How to travel Malaysia on budget trip – We did at $5 per day

Yeah, it’s possible to travel to Malaysia as cheap as $5≅20MYR per person per day. Recently we have experienced 13 days in Kuala Lumpur and spent only $4≅16MYR a day which includes food, accommodation & local transportation. Wondering how? Read this blog to find out the same.
(note: this blog post is for backpackers and travelers, not for those who are going to Malaysia for a short holiday or leisure trip)

1. Accommodation: KL has plenty of options where you can do volunteering through websites like workaway (which is a platform where you can volunteer and exchange culture) or if you are lucky then you can also find some amazing Couchsurfing (but it’s mostly for short stay) hosts. We stayed in a hostel (Birdnest) in KL which was situated just at the city center and very close to the famous china town. We got a place to stay for 10 days where we cooked our own meals and have got breakfast for free. The job was easy, just take care of the reception for a few hours and then you are free to go & explore the city. This is how you can save money on accommodation while traveling to Malaysia.

2. Food: Food is really cheap in Kuala Lumpur, you can easily find a meal at around 3 Ringgit for 1 person. If you are looking for a cheap hostel then make sure you opt for a hostel which provides a kitchen or at least microwave, so you can make instant noodles or pasta & can save money on food while traveling to Malaysia.

3. Local Transport:

a) Airport Express Line: Do not take airport express train while coming from Airport to the city (if you have plenty of time), Take a bus which is cheaper (around 10 Ringgit), the express train cost around 55 Ringgits.

b) For local transport: You can almost go to every corner of KL for free. Yes,  you heard it right, IT IS FREE!! Kuala Lumpur has a bus service named as “GOKL” which goes to all the popular destinations and also provides very good wifi for free. There are 4 lines which run on a fixed route.

c) Local Train: Places like Batu Caves, KL Central, etc are easily connected to MRT which is the local train (known as Metro in some countries like India)

d) Go Walk: The city has pedestrians crossing and it’s easy to walk across. so if the distance is around 1-2 KM then choose this option.
